Querido presidente Biden (y qué gran satisfacción me da llamarle así…), los cubano-americanos que votamos por usted y quienes confiamos en que usted puede liderar a este país fuera de la tragedia del covid19, estamos agradecidos y orgullosos de que, apenas durante sus primeros meses, haya colocado a los Estados Unidos en el rumbo a la recuperación. También sentimos gran satisfacción por sus logros en la arena internacional y por el empeño que ha puesto en resolver nuestros retos en temas de migración. Usted está demostrando ser el presidente por el cual tuvimos la confianza de votar.
Hay un solo punto, sin embargo, por el cual necesito dirigirme a usted, y es el relacionado con la terrible situación que está atravesando mi familia y todas las familias cubanas que viven en la isla. La administración anterior intentó presionar como ninguna otra al gobierno comunista cubano, pero en su empeño por complacer a su base electoral y ofrecerles un triunfo que no fue capaz de lograr, cruzó una línea que no debiera ser vulnerada: le dificultó a las familias cubanas ayudarse en tiempos de pandemia, encareció las posibilidades de viajar y de verse, y les hizo increíblemente difícil acceder a servicios consulares del gobierno de los Estados Unidos.
El ex presidente culpó de todo al gobierno cubano, pero fue incapaz de negociar y ofrecer una solución viable para las familias atrapadas en medio del conflicto. La familia cubana nunca debió estar sujeta a condición de ninguna parte. Las familias cubanas no deben ser objetos de negociación, ni estar sometidas a condición ideológica alguna.
Le pido que considere lo antes posible comenzar a desarmar las dificultades que fueron establecidas para las familias cubanas desde la administración anterior. Usted prometió una revisión y un cambio de política hacia Cuba, y muchos cubanos-americanos contribuímos gratamente a su campaña desde todos los estados de la unión. Necesitamos desesperadamente que hoy escuche nuestro pedido y honre su promesa lo antes posible, comenzando por
1) Buscar una solución al envío de remesas por vías formales y accesibles tales como la ofrecida por Western Union.
2) Crear las condiciones para ofrecer servicios consulares estadounidenses dentro de la isla de Cuba
3) Permitirle a los cubanos viajar con destino a cualquier aeropuerto de Cuba, y no sólo a La Habana.
4) Facilitar cualquier tipo de transacción u ayuda humanitaria que contribuya al enfrentamiento de la covid19 y a sus consecuencias dentro de la isla.

Open letter from a “Cubano with Biden” to President Joe Biden
Dear President Biden (and what a great satisfaction to address you as such), the Cuban-Americans who voted for you and trusted that you can lead this country out of the tragedy of Covid19, are grateful and proud that, in just these first few months, you have set the United States on the path to recovery. We also feel great pride for your achievements in the international arena and for the effort that you have put into solving our challenges on migration issues. You are proving to be the president that we had the confidence to vote for.
There is only one issue, however, for which I feel the need to write this letter, and it is related to the terrible situation that my family in Cuba and all families living in the island are going through. The previous administration tried to pressure the Cuban communist government like no other, but in its efforts to please its electoral base and offer them a victory that it was not able to achieve, it crossed a line that should not be violated: it made it extremely difficult for Cuban Americans to support their families during a global pandemic, made family travel more expensive and cumbersome, and made it almost impossible for them to access consular services from the United States government.
The former president blamed everything on the Cuban government, but was unable (or unwilling) to offer a viable solution for families caught in the middle of the conflict. The wellbeing of Cuban families, on both shores, should never be used as terms of negotiation or subjected to any ideological or political considerations.
I ask that you consider as soon as possible to begin to dismantle the obstacles that were established for Cuban families since the previous administration. You promised a review and a change of policy towards Cuba, and many Cuban-Americans contributed gratefully to your campaign from all the states of the Union. We desperately need you today to hear our request and honor your promise as soon as possible, starting with:
1) Eliminate any limits on remittances and to find a solution to sending remittances through formal and affordable channels such as that offered by Western Union.
2) Create the conditions to offer US consular services within the island of Cuba
3) Allow Cubans to travel to any airport in Cuba, and not only to Havana.
4) Facilitate any type of transaction or humanitarian aid that contributes to the confrontation of the covid19 and its consequences within the island
